SESIS users owed back pay will receive it in next check

Because of our recent landmark arbitration victory, the Department of Education is issuing back pay this month to UFT members who did work outside the regular work day on the Special Education Student Information System (SESIS) between September 2011 and Dec. 31, 2012. Any members who are owed money for after-hours SESIS work during this period should receive payment in your regular April 30 paycheck.

The amount of back pay is based, following the arbitrator’s instructions, on the DOE’s records of how much time each user was logged into the SESIS system outside regular work hours.

The union has worked hard to force the DOE to compensate SESIS users for all the additional time that they spent completing this onerous duty. As a result of our arbitration victory, more than 31,000 members will receive back pay this month. In addition, the DOE will have to make a second payment later this year for after-hours work done on SESIS between Jan. 1, 2013 and March 22, 2013 because the arbitrator found that the DOE ignored his initial award when it carved out specific time in the work day for some titles but not all to do SESIS work. The union’s position is that all UFT-represented titles should get sufficient time during their workday for SESIS-related work.

Remember the DOE issued a directive stating that you are not to work on SESIS after hours without permission from your supervisor. If you receive permission, make sure it is in writing and indicates that you will be paid. It is important that you follow this directive as we continue negotiating with the DOE regarding SESIS as the arbitrator ordered.
